Organised by the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, in collaboration with the Centre for Open Societal Systems (COSS) from India, the workshop was held in the presence of the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul; the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, Dr Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor; members of the Indian delegation; and representatives of Government, private sector, banking and financial services, telecommunications operators and academia.
The workshop provided an opportunity to learn from India’s experience in implementing DPI and discuss how similar solutions could be adapted to the local context, with the involvement of public and private sector stakeholders.
The workshop also featured discussions involving representatives of the banking sector, telecommunications operators, academia and Government. Participants exchanged views on the country’s needs and potential applications of DPI, as well as opportunities for collaboration to support innovation, entrepreneurship and more efficient digital services.
Addressing the participants, Minister Ramtohul highlighted the importance of DPI in improving e-government services, explaining that citizens’ information was currently held across different Government institutions, making access to updated information and the delivery of certain services more challenging. He stressed the need for a coordinated system that would allow secure information sharing between institutions.
According to Dr Ramtohul, the proposed infrastructure would include digital identity, a digital wallet and electronic payment facilities, making it easier for citizens to access government services and for businesses to verify customer information.
