The opportunities for Mauritius and the United States of America (US) to explore collaboration in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), were at the forefront of discussions, during a courtesy call the US Ambassador to Mauritius, Mr Henry Victor Jardine, had on the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul, this afternoon, in Ebène.
In a statement Minister Ramtohul said that he had a fruitful discussion with the US Ambassador, during which various avenues of collaboration mainly in cybersecurity areas, and Artificial Intelligence were identified.
‘We believe we have a lot to draw from the digitalisation experience that the US has gone through, particularly being a huge market with different types of complexities’, he said.
He affirmed that Mauritius being a less complex society and smaller geography-wise, can easily draw from their learning.
As for the US Ambassador Jardine, he stated that he had the opportunity to discuss the priorities of the Minister, and thereof see how the US can provide any assistance.
Referring to the US ongoing collaboration with the Ministry, the Ambassador pointed out that the Data Protection Office is being supported in developing guidelines and a guidebook on AI.
‘We are looking at a comprehensive approach for cooperating and supporting the work of the Ministry and the vision that the Minister is hoping to accomplish’, he said.
Other topics Ambassador Jardine evoked during the meeting, include: training opportunities on cybersecurity for officers of the Ministry as well as promoting commercial cooperation with Mauritius.
