The AI Adoption, Readiness and Governance Survey for Mauritian Businesses was launched yesterday by the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul, at the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) in Port Louis.
This Survey, an initiative of the MCCI, OTAM and CAPFOR Mauritius, aims to assess the level of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption among local enterprises, evaluate their organisational preparedness and examine governance practices. It also seeks to provide insights into the opportunities and challenges faced by businesses in adopting AI technologies.
The President of the MCCI, Mr Patrice Marie; the President of the Outsourcing and Telecommunications Association of Mauritius (OTAM), Ms Jenny Chan; the Managing Director of CAPFOR Mauritius, Mr Frédéric Romann; and other personalities were also present at the launching ceremony.
In his address, Minister Ramtohul commended this initiative, stressing that measuring AI adoption is essential to inform policy-makers and support the country’s digital transformation. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to fostering the responsible use of AI while enumerating initiatives to accelerate its adoption, including the establishment of an AI Unit, the National AI Strategy, AI laboratories and training programmes to equip Mauritians with AI skills.
Dr Ramtohul also highlighted the growing role of the ICT sector in the economy, noting that it currently contributes around 5.4% to Gross Domestic Product. According to him, the aim is to increase this contribution to around 10 and 12%.
The Minister further pointed out that AI is increasingly becoming part of everyday life and is transforming the way businesses operate, improve productivity and deliver services. He underscored that AI should complement human capabilities rather than replace them, while emphasising the need for responsible governance, data protection and ethical use of the technology.
As for the President of MCCI, he underscored the importance of understanding the level of AI adoption across the private sector to better identify business needs, skills gaps and governance requirements. He noted that the survey findings will support the design of targeted programmes to enhance productivity, innovation and competitiveness.
The President of OTAM indicated that the survey will provide a comprehensive baseline of AI adoption, readiness and governance among Mauritian businesses, adding that it will pave the way to monitor progress over time and support evidence-based decision-making. She called on businesses of all sizes to participate in the survey as their input will contribute to shaping policies and initiatives that support the country’s digital transformation.
The Managing Director of CAPFOR Mauritius, for his part, presented an overview of the AI Business Barometer, which focuses on three key areas namely AI integration across economic sectors; organisational readiness, including infrastructure and skills; and governance frameworks covering data protection, regulatory compliance and ethical standards.
