Government is moving to strengthen the fight against online abuse in Mauritius, with closer cooperation with Meta on tackling fake accounts, identity impersonation, hate speech and illegal content. The move follows discussions between Government officials and Meta representatives yesterday in Ebene, with both sides exploring faster content-removal mechanisms and a proposed framework for cooperation tailored to Mauritius.

The working session, organised by the Ministry of Technology, Communication and Innovation, brought together several Ministers, Members of Parliament and governmental institutions and Meta representatives to examine the legal framework and operational challenges surrounding online platforms.
The Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul, raised several pertinent issues including the possibility of developing tools to prevent the publication of certain unacceptable terms in English, French and Kreol. The need for policies that take into account the Mauritian context, as well as stronger moderation in Mauritian Kreol were brought forth.
Particular attention was given to the possibility of Meta having local representation in Mauritius, which could facilitate closer engagement with the authorities. Proposed amendments to the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Act 2021 were also discussed, alongside mechanisms for faster handling of content takedown requests.
Child online safety emerged as another key area. Discussions covered age assurance, verifiable identity, stronger protection for children by default and safeguards against harmful interactions between minors and strangers. Meta outlined measures including Instagram Teen Accounts, privacy and account protections, content settings, reporting and blocking tools, as well as educational resources for teenagers and parents.
Meta stakeholders also highlighted mechanisms allowing minors (or their parents/guardians) to request the removal of their images, alongside strict, rapid-response procedures for handling Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.
The company also outlined several reporting and escalation mechanisms, including its Government Content Reporting channel, Law Enforcement Online Request system, Critical Incident Escalation process and Trusted Partner Programme as tools to facilitate cooperation with authorities and address urgent cases.
