Internet connectivity will soon be extended to Raphael Island within the St Brandon Archipelago following the signing of a contract between the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) and Emtel Ltd.<\/p>

The agreement was signed yesterday at Le Labourdonnais Hotel, Port Louis, in presence of the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul; the Chairman of ICTA, Mr Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum and the Executive Director, Mr Atishay Sookun; the Chief Executive Officer of Emtel Ltd, Mr Marcelo Aleman and other stakeholders.<\/p>

Funded through the Universal Service Fund (USF), the project aims to provide digital connectivity to the island and support essential public and economic services. Emtel Ltd will provide an overall Internet capacity of 34 Mbps downlink and 12 Mbps uplink, delivered through Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.<\/p>

The service will connect the National Coast Guard\u2019s Coastal Surveillance Radar System and provide dedicated internet access to the National Coast Guard, Mauritius Meteorological Services and Raphael Fishing Co Ltd. It is expected to strengthen maritime security, weather monitoring, emergency communications and operations on the island.<\/p>

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ramtohul described the initiative as an important step towards inclusive digital development, stressing that geographical distance should not prevent outer-island communities from accessing connectivity, services and economic opportunities. He noted that the project is aligned with the ICT Blueprint 2025 and the national AI strategy.<\/p>

The Minister pointed out the USF as a key instrument for extending digital infrastructure to areas where conventional networks are difficult to deploy. He called for greater internet penetration, responsible use of technology and respect for privacy, while pointing to initiatives such as Kalit\u00e9Net and the State Age Pension App under KorekApp.<\/p>

Chairman Pillay Chedumbrum underlined the importance of reliable connectivity, stating that the outer islands must form part of Mauritius\u2019 digital transformation. The Executive Director, Mr Atishay Sookun, highlighted that Rs 328 million has been committed to USF projects over the past five years, covering free Wi-Fi sites, Digital Service Centres in post offices and connectivity initiatives in the outer islands.<\/p>

Mr Marcelo Aleman indicated that installation work is underway, with the service expected to be completed by the end of August. The agreement provides for two years of service.<\/p>
