ICT Minister calls for stronger cybersecurity for postal sector<\/div>

Strengthening cybersecurity and enhancing resilience are essential to ensuring the sustainable digital transformation of the postal and logistics sector, stated the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul, this morning, at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Port Louis. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day Universal Postal Union (UPU) POST-ISAC Capacity Development Workshop, organised jointly by the UPU and Mauritius Post Ltd.<\/p>

The Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Post Ltd, Mr P. Seeruttun, and local and international experts from the postal and logistics sector, were also present. The training aims to enhance cybersecurity preparedness and cyber resilience through expert-led discussions and practical simulation exercises.<\/p>

In his address, Minister Ramtohul observed that the rapid pace of digital transformation has increased organisations’ exposure to cyber threats, including ransomware attacks and supply chain compromises, which are affecting businesses worldwide, including postal operators. These threats, he said, have become a strategic priority and require effective governance, continuous risk management, and close collaboration among government agencies, industry partners, technology providers, and international postal organisations.<\/p>

Reiterating the Government’s commitment to strengthening the national cybersecurity framework, he recalled that Mauritius has adopted the ISO\/IEC 27001 standard, which provides a systematic and risk-based framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an Information Security Management System. The Minister encouraged Mauritius Post Ltd to implement the standard to reinforce trust, improve information security practices, and further enhance the country’s attractiveness to investors.<\/p>

Dr Ramtohul also outlined recent legislative reforms supporting the country’s digital transformation agenda. He noted that amendments to the Electronic Transactions Act 2006 have modernised the legal framework for digital commerce by introducing a reliability-based standard for electronic signatures, legal recognition of automated contracting, and a framework for electronic transferable records to facilitate paperless trade. Additionally, the Consumers Protection Act will also be amended to provide for further protection in electronic transactions, he added.<\/p>

For his part, Mr Seeruttun underlined that the postal and logistics sector is undergoing rapid transformation as digital technologies continue to reshape service delivery and customer expectations. He observed that customers increasingly expect digital services, faster deliveries, greater convenience, and more efficient operations. To meet these evolving demands, postal organisations must embrace innovation while ensuring that technological advancement is supported by robust cybersecurity measures.<\/p>

He highlighted that Mauritius Post Ltd is determined in building a stronger, safer, and more resilient postal sector while stressing that cybersecurity and digitalisation must progress together.<\/p>
